In Conversation with Nick Lea: Advancing Remote Monitoring & DisasterCare Academy
As part of our ongoing commitment to sharing insights from across the DisasterCare network, we recently sat down with Technical Director, Nick Lea, to hear how he’s settling into his new role and to get an update on two exciting developments — the rollout of Remote Monitoring Technology and the launch of the DisasterCare Academy.
Since joining in October, Nick has quickly become a driving force in advancing innovation, consistency, and technical excellence across the organisation. With over 20 years of industry experience, he brings both deep sector knowledge and strong relationships with colleagues, branches, and insurer partners.
“It’s exciting — I’m loving the team,” Nick shares. “There’s so much to do and so much to get my teeth into, especially with the launch of the new DisasterCare Academy. The standards across our network are already very high, but I want to make sure everyone has the training, support, and career development they deserve.”
Transforming Drying Operations with Remote Monitoring
When we asked Nick about technological innovation, he highlighted the organisation-wide rollout of Remote Monitoring Technology — a development he believes will redefine efficiency, responsiveness, and environmental impact.
Nick explained that this technology enables full visibility of drying programs in real time, without the need for multiple site visits.
“The days of visiting site two or three times a week are behind us,” he said. “Remote monitoring allows us to be proactive and responsive while reducing disruption for policyholders. It also supports our ESG commitments by cutting down unnecessary travel.”
The system provides accurate, live data 24 hours a day, gives branches greater operational control, and ensures insurers have clear, reliable reporting. As Nick noted, this shift frees up capacity for the network to spend more time on the work that really matters — supporting people during some of their most challenging moments.
Developing the DisasterCare Academy
Nick also shared updates on another major area of focus: the development of the DisasterCare Academy, which will introduce a structured training framework across the network.
“We’re at the very start of that journey,” Nick explained. “The framework is now being put in place to create a consistent approach to training. It’s about giving our people the support, confidence, and clarity they need to continue providing an exceptional service.”
The Academy will play a central role in standardising operations, strengthening technical knowledge, and enhancing the customer experience across every branch. Nick also highlighted the opportunity to expand specialist training in contents restoration — an area where DisasterCare already leads the industry, restoring over 90% of items brought into its network.
“Ultimately, our teams help people when they’re at their lowest point,” he said. “They don’t just restore homes — they help restore lives. The Academy is about supporting them to make that journey even better for themselves, our clients, and the communities we serve.”
Resilience Restored
Through continued investment in technology, training, and people, DisasterCare remains committed to delivering disaster recovery with care, expertise, and innovation — ensuring Resilience Restored for policyholders, partners, and communities nationwide.
